Thirteen days built around the roads that go furthest ,to Hushe, the final settlement before the Karakoram’s giant peaks take over, to Fairy Meadows and the base of Nanga Parbat (8,126m), and out along the Karakoram Highway to Shimshal and the Chinese border corridor. A cultural ride through Pakistan’s Hindu Kush, from the pine forests of Swat and Kumrat to Shandur Pass, home of the world’s highest polo ground, and down into the Kalash valleys, where the Kalasha people still keep a pre-Islamic religion, language and calendar found nowhere else on earth. Starts and ends in Skardu, with Deosai Plateau as the opening act.

Follow a modern route along the old Silk Road, by private coach from Islamabad through the Kaghan Valley and over Babusar Pass to Gilgit, then by motorcycle along the Karakoram Highway to Khunjerab Pass, 4,693m above sea level and the highest paved international border on earth. Along the way: the cliff-edge Shimshal road, rated among the most dramatic in the world, and a night beside Pakistan’s own cold desert in Skardu.
