Shandur Polo Festival is a unique event, unlike any other game festival in the world. It takes place at the polo ground located in the Ghizer district of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral District, serving as a commonly shared pass between these regions. Shandur is a flat plateau, which is also the border between KPK and Gilgit-Baltistan. The ground was first used for polo in 1936 and has since become the greatest polo ground in the North Region. It is about 155 km from Chitral Town and 200 km from Gilgit City.
What makes this festival stand out is its incredible location. The polo ground is located at an elevation of 3,743 m above sea level. It is not only a fascinating site for tourists from all over the world, but it also holds significant historical and cultural significance. The birth of this ground is itself an incredible story of local wisdom. The matches are played between different teams from Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral, and the final game is a contest between the Gilgit and Chitral teams. These two teams have been rivals in this game for centuries. Witnessing a horse charging on the roof of the world is a breathtaking experience.
Apart from the polo ground, other attractions in the vicinity include Shandur Lake, Langar, and Phandar Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan. Our well-planned tour in the Hindukush mountain range links the Shandur Polo Festival with other popular destinations to give our guests a complete experience of the region.
