The memorial is marked by plaques and engraved tin plates, which are affixed to a small rocky outcrop at the foot of this awe-inspiring mountain. After a challenging 5-6 hour hike, the group will reach Ali Camp, named after the legendary porter who first crossed the Gondogoro La Pass.

Day 46 of the K2 Expedition will begin with an early start at 2 am. After gearing up and having breakfast, the participants will set off for the Gondogoro La base. The support crew will be available to help fix ropes and assist with gear, as needed. It will take approximately 3 hours to reach the top of the Gondogoro La Pass, where the participants will be rewarded with breathtaking views of all four 8000ers in the Baltoro region, including K2, G1, Broad Peak, and G2.

As the participants descend on the other side, fixed ropes will be utilized extensively for safety, and the use of crampons is vital. Along the way, they will also have the opportunity to admire the stunning Laila Peak (6,096m) and other trinity peaks.

The participants must be extra careful while descending and watch their every step to avoid dislodging stones that could hit their team members. Once they reach the slope, the trail becomes easier and they will move onto the moraine. They will set up camp at Khuispang (4,600m), the junction point of Gondogoro and Trinity Glacier.

Accommodation: Accommodation for the night will be provided in twin-sharing dome tents.

Meals: Meals will include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with snacks such as dry fruits and chocolate for the trek. Before dinner, the participants can enjoy an appetizer such as soup or fried snacks, and after dinner, they can indulge in dessert or fruit.

Day 47 of the K2 Expedition Itinerary Details offers a change of scenery as the participants descend from the mountainous terrain to the lush green landscapes of Hushe Valley. The hiking downwards will be comparatively easy, so the climbing equipment like ropes and crampons will be packed away while descending. The participants will enjoy the view of the valley of rhubarb and grass while continuing to hike toward the edge of the Gondogoro Glacier. Upon reaching the edge, they will find a trail that leads to the beautiful valley.

There are two different routes to the destination at the end of the valley, and the guide with the consent of local porters will decide which one to take. As the two trails meet, the members will see huts made of stones by herders and local settlers, and they will experience the signs of the settlements in the area. The trek becomes easy from here, and the participants will breathe easily due to the big trees and lower altitude. The camp will be set up at Saicho (3,350m), which has a part of sand with little grass along the flowing glacier water streams.

Accommodation: Camping in a twin-sharing dome tent (see pictures)

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner + snacks (dry fruit/chocolate) for the trek, appetizer (soup/fried snacks) before dinner, and dessert/fruits after dinner.

On this day, the participants will embark on a relatively short trek of only 3-4 hours. They will be greeted by the refreshing sight of the Charakusa, Ailling, Masherbrum and Gondogoro Glaciers’ melted water flowing into a river stream. The landscape will change as they trek down, and they will soon begin to see signs of human habitation such as shelters, fields, and other indications of people living in the area.

The Hushe village’s two-story shelters will be among the highlights of the day’s trek. The ground floor is designated for cattle, while the first floor is used by families as living quarters. After setting up camp, the participants will have the opportunity to explore the beautiful Hushe Valley and interact with the friendly locals. This will be the last camping day of the Gondogoro La Trek.

After arriving in Hushe, the participants will leave for Skardu town, which will offer plenty of scenic views of the different small villages in the Hushe Valley. To reach the other side, they will cross a suspension bridge above the Shyok River, which flows from Ladakh, India. Traditionally, goat skin rafts filled with air were used to cross the river, but now the suspension bridge, built in the 1990s, serves as a safe and reliable crossing.

Once the bridge has been crossed, the participants will reach Khaplu, and the drive from there to Skardu will be smooth. The paved road along the Shayok River leads to the confluence with the Indus River, and driving along the Indus River will take about four hours to reach Skardu. The participants will have access to facilities that were not available for the past two weeks, including the ability to take a hot shower and enjoy a good meal.

Accommodation: Accommodation will be provided in twin-sharing rooms at Concordia Motel, Mountain Lodge, or an equivalent standard partner hotel in Skardu, depending on occupancy.

Meals: The meals provided will include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as tea/coffee and snacks.

However, sometimes weather conditions can cause flight cancellations, and in such cases, the participants will take an eight to ten-hour drive to Chilas for an overnight stay.

In Islamabad, participants can explore the city’s vibrant culture, indulge in delicious cuisine, or visit the famous Faisal Mosque. The city offers a wide range of activities to suit different preferences.

Accommodation: Accommodation will be provided in twin-sharing rooms at Chateau Royale, Prestige Residence, or an equivalent partner hotel, depending on occupancy. The hotel provides a comfortable and relaxing stay for the participants.

Day 51 is a flexible day that accounts for any potential delays caused by the weather or other unforeseen circumstances. If the participants were unable to fly to Islamabad the previous day, they will depart early morning from Chilas and make their way to Islamabad. The drive takes approximately ten hours and offers a chance to take in the beautiful scenery of the region.

However, if the participants made it to Islamabad on the previous day, they will have a free day to relax, sightsee, and sign the final paperwork. This is a great opportunity to explore the city and soak up the local culture.

Accommodation: Twin-sharing room at Chateau Royale (see pictures), Prestige Residence (see pictures) or equivalent standard partner hotel (depending on occupancy) in Islamabad.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided, along with tea, coffee, and snacks.

It is worth noting that the checkout time of all our partner hotels is 12 pm, so our guests are advised to check out of their rooms in a timely manner to avoid any delays in their airport transfers.

Important Notice

What are the benefits of early registration?

1. Building a Team: Crafting a great team takes time. We carefully evaluate all applications and select the most experienced mountaineers to form the optimal team. While our vetting process is not excessively rigid, the safety of our fellow climbers is always our primary concern. We do not accept every application just to increase the number of climbers on our team.

2. Logistics: Logistics play a critical role in our climbing expeditions. We make advance reservations and assignments for high-altitude porters, guides, and other staff, and procure necessary equipment and food. These arrangements cannot be made at the last minute. For winter expeditions in the Pakistani mountains, most of the supplies are transported to base camps two to three months prior to the expedition due to the extreme winter conditions, making it difficult for porters to carry heavy supplies through the trail.

3. Permit: In accordance with Pakistani government tourism laws, tour operators must submit climbing applications (including all necessary documents such as passport copies, photos, CVs, etc.) at least 70 days prior to their scheduled arrival in Pakistan.

4. Domestic Flights: It is crucial to pay your deposit on time as we may not be able to secure your seat on the domestic flight to Skardu. Due to the limited number of flights (only two during peak season), seats are quickly sold out in advance. This is a significant issue that must be addressed to ensure a smooth and successful trip.

5. Price Changes: The prices offered are subject to change and currently reflect early bird discount rates. It is important to note that prices may increase after January, as service providers such as hotels often raise their rates during peak season (May to September). Early reservations are generally less expensive than those made during peak season. Once you have paid the deposit, our prices will remain fixed, meaning the price at the time of booking is the price you will ultimately pay. To avoid any potential price increases, we highly recommend registering early for your holiday.

6. Pay less deposit: Below is the deposit schedule for departures in 2023.

  • 8 months before departure (deposit: 35%)
  • 6 months before departure (deposit: 40%)
  • 5 months before departure (deposit: 50%)
  • 4 months before departure (full payment)

Note: The same deposit time frames above apply to 2023-24 departures.

Refund policy

Deposit: Please note that the deposit is non-refundable, as it will be utilized for in-country arrangements, logistics, equipment procurement (such as oxygen sets), supply acquisition (including food), and the hiring of staff/sherpas.

The balance payment for the expedition is due 120 days prior to arrival in Pakistan, unless otherwise specified. Participants who fail to make their balance payment by the stated deadline risk forfeiting their funds and their place on the expedition. Please note that no refunds will be issued for either the deposit or balance payments, regardless of whether the expedition concludes without reaching the summit or making progress towards it, due to factors such as route conditions, weather, insufficient manpower, or any other circumstances beyond the control of Spantik Pakistan. The expedition leader has the final say on the conclusion of the expedition and will make every effort to ensure a safe and satisfying return for all participants.

Currency

Overview

The journey to K2 takes us through the magnificent Shigar Valley and Baltoro Glacier region of Baltistan, home to several towering peaks in the world’s largest temperate zone glacier. Out of the numerous peaks in the region, nineteen exceed 7,600m and four are 8000ers, making this region an adventurer’s paradise.

While K2 is known as the second-highest mountain on earth, it holds the title of “Savage Mountain,” reigning supreme in the mountain realm. Its climb is an arduous and technical feat, 10 times less frequently attempted than Mount Everest, and only the brave who conquer it will be immortalized in history.

The Abruzzi Ridge, also known as the Standard Route, was the first-ever route attempted for the K2 Expedition and remains the most used route to date via the Abruzzi Spur (Southeast Ridge). In 1909, the Duke of the Abruzzi, Luigi Amedeo, led the first K2 Expedition attempt, and it was not until July 31, 1954, that an Italian team led by Ardito Desio successfully summited the Savage Mountain, with climbers Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni reaching the top.

We will take the Abruzzi Route for our ascent, starting at an altitude of 5,400m/17,700ft, where the Advanced Base Camp is usually set up. The route is a challenging mix of ice fields, rock ribs, snow slopes, and technical rock climbing on two iconic features, “House’s Chimney” and the “Black Pyramid.”

Beyond the Black Pyramid lies a perilously exposed and challenging terrain that leads to the visible “Shoulder.” The final significant obstacle is a narrow couloir, known as the “Bottleneck,” where climbers are precariously close to hanging seracs. In 2002 and 2003, the K2 Expedition failed to reach the peak due to the collapse of one of these seracs, and tragically, most of the eleven people lost their lives due to the falling ice blocks from this cliff on their way down.

Embark on this unforgettable journey to conquer Savage Mountain, and etch your name in history as one of the brave climbers to summit K2.
