⦿ Overview
Fairy Meadows is a grassy plateau in the Diamer District of Gilgit-Baltistan, sitting at around 3,300 metres right below the Raikot face of Nanga Parbat. German climbers in the 1930s named it “Märchenwiese,” the fairy-tale meadow, and the name has stayed ever since.
There are no roads on the meadow itself. Travellers leave the Karakoram Highway at Raikot Bridge, take a jeep up one of Pakistan’s most thrilling mountain tracks to Tato village, and walk the last stretch through pine forest to the meadow.
Wooden cabins and campsites run by local families are the only places to stay. Days are spent walking to Beyal Camp and the Nanga Parbat viewpoints; evenings bring bonfires, simple home-cooked meals and some of the clearest night skies in the country.
From Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway (about 2 hours from Gilgit), local jeeps climb a narrow track to Tato village in around 1–1.5 hours.
From the end of the jeep track it is a 2–3 hour hike, about 5 km, to Fairy Meadows. Porters and horses can carry luggage.
