Two of northern Pakistan's defining landscapes, back to back. Fly into Skardu and ride straight onto the Deosai Plateau ,a treeless, 4,114m-high wilderness home to the Himalayan brown bear ,then turn north onto the old Silk Road corridor: the Karakoram Highway through Hunza and Passu, all the way to Khunjerab Pass at the Chinese border. Take the short domestic flight to Skardu, on a clear day, one of the most scenic scheduled flights anywhere, threading between 7,000m peaks. Collect your motorcycle and take a short ride out to Chunda Valley, known locally for its orchards of apricot, apple and cherry trees, before returning to Skardu for the night.

Ride up onto the Deosai Plateau, a near-treeless expanse of grassland stretching across 3,000 kmΒ² at close to 4,000m, one of the last refuges of the Himalayan brown bear in Pakistan. Break at Sadpara Lake on the way up, then take in Kala Pani, Bara Pani and the glacial blue of Sheosar Lake before descending into Astore for the night.

Leave the high plateau behind and drop into Hunza Valley, one of the greenest and most cultivated corners of Gilgit-Baltistan. Stop for a clear view of Rakaposhi (7,788m) from the roadside viewpoint, then browse Karimabad Bazaar and walk the ramparts of Altit Fort before dinner.

Ride via Hopar, where the glacier tongue reaches almost to the roadside, and pass through the Pak-China Friendship Tunnel, a symbol of the highway's long engineering history. Continue past Attabad Lake's improbably turquoise water and across the wooden Hussaini Suspension Bridge before reaching Passu for the night.

Ride to the very top of the Karakoram Highway. Past the granite spires of Passu Cones and through Sost, the last Pakistani outpost, the road climbs into Khunjerab National Park to the pass itself, 4,693m above sea level and the highest paved international border on the planet, complete with the world's highest ATM machine.

Head south along the Hunza River toward Gilgit, capital of Gilgit-Baltistan, with the Karakoram peaks framing every turn. Spend the afternoon browsing Gilgit's bazaar for local handicrafts and dried fruit before settling in for the night.

The tour starts and ends in Skardu; Islamabad is used only for your international flight connections at the very start and end of the trip.

Yes, a backup support vehicle travels with the group for the full tour, carrying luggage and handling any mechanical issues.

Deosai National Park is entirely off-road and can be slippery in wet weather. The off-road section runs roughly 80 km, at close to 4,000m above sea level.
