Tirich Valley – Gateway to the Hindukush
Tirich Valley serves as the gateway to some of the major trekking, hiking, and mountaineering destinations in the Chitral district. Situated in the central Hindukush, the valley is home to towering peaks and glaciers.
The main highlights include seven of the highest massifs in the Hindukush:
- Tirich Mir Main (7,708 m)
- Tirich Mir East (7,690 m)
- Noshaq Main (7,492 m)
- Noshaq East (7,480 m)
- Istor o Nal (7,403 m)
- Saraghrar (7,349 m)
- Shingeik Zom (7,290 m)
The valley has small villages with apricot and apple trees in between. Its rich land and beautiful views of glaciers and mountains make it very scenic.Travelers often drive up to Zani Pass at 3,840 m, from where a trekking route descends to Shagrom, the last inhabited settlement in the area, offering basic guesthouses and camping facilities. From the top of Zani Pass, one can enjoy views of the Hindukush and Hindu Raj ranges. The trek to Tirich Mir Basecamp passes through summer pastures like Athak, Bandok, and Sheniak, and winds through birch and willow forests at the foot of the lower Tirich Glacier.
Traditionally, the local population relies on small-scale farming. In earlier decades, many locals also found seasonal employment by assisting trekking and mountaineering expeditions as guides, porters, and cooks.
