Shimshal – The Valley of Mountaineers
Location and Geography
Shimshal is a remote village and valley located in Gojal Tehsil of Hunza District, Gilgit-Baltistan. Situated at around 3,113 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest inhabited valleys in northern Pakistan. It lies close to the Pakistan–China border and is surrounded by some of the tallest peaks in the region, including the Distaghil Sar (7,885 m).
History & Origin
According to local stories, Shimshal was founded in the 15th century by Mamu Singh of the Brong family. For centuries, it remained isolated due to its harsh and rugged terrain. Road construction began in 1985 and finally completed in 2003, connecting Shimshal to Passu and the rest of Hunza.
People, Culture & Economy
Shimshal has a population of around 2,000 people living in approximately 250 households. Residents speak Wakhi, a Pamiri language, and belong mainly to the Wakhi ethnic group. The community follows Nizari Ismaili Islam. Their traditional economic activities include farming, livestock rearing (yak, sheep, goats), dairy production, and handmade goods. Shimshal is also famous as the “Valley of Mountaineers,” producing many renowned climbers who have guided international expeditions.
