Shimshal – The Valley of Mountaineers

Location and Geography

Shimshal is a remote village and valley located in Gojal Tehsil of Hunza District, Gilgit-Baltistan. Situated at around 3,113 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest inhabited valleys in northern Pakistan. It lies close to the Pakistan–China border and is surrounded by some of the tallest peaks in the region, including the Distaghil Sar (7,885 m).

History & Origin

According to local stories, Shimshal was founded in the 15th century by Mamu Singh of the Brong family. For centuries, it remained isolated due to its harsh and rugged terrain. Road construction began in 1985 and finally completed in 2003, connecting Shimshal to Passu and the rest of Hunza.

People, Culture & Economy

Shimshal has a population of around 2,000 people living in approximately 250 households. Residents speak Wakhi, a Pamiri language, and belong mainly to the Wakhi ethnic group. The community follows Nizari Ismaili Islam. Their traditional economic activities include farming, livestock rearing (yak, sheep, goats), dairy production, and handmade goods. Shimshal is also famous as the “Valley of Mountaineers,” producing many renowned climbers who have guided international expeditions.

Traditional Clothing / Costumes

Due to cold weather, Shimshal’s clothing is mostly wool-based and handmade.

Men wear:

  • Woolen caps
  • Long shirts & loose trousers
  • Wool coats (chugha)
  • Heavy handmade boots
Women wear:
  • Colorful long dresses
  • Embroidered woolen shawls
  • Scarves and handmade jewelry
  • Thick coats during winter

Clothing varies from simple daily wear to colorful cultural outfits during festivals.

Culture & Traditions

Culture

Shimshal’s culture reflects Wakhi traditions:

  • Deep sense of community
  • Respect for elders
  • Hospitality
  • Music, poetry, dance
  • A strong mountaineering heritage passed down generations
Their culture is simple, peaceful, and closely tied to nature.

Traditions

One of the most unique traditions is Nomus, a communal system where families build public structures (paths, bridges, channels) in someone's honor. Other traditions include:

  • Seasonal migration to Shimshal Pamir
  • Festivals like Ginani and Nowroz
  • Storytelling nights, folk poetry, and Wakhi songs

Cultivation / Farming

Due to high altitude, the growing season is short. Terrace farming is practiced using glacier-melt water for irrigation.
Major crops:

  • Barley
  • Potatoes
  • Wheat
  • Buckwheat
  • Peas, turnips, spinach
Farming is mostly organic and depends heavily on community cooperation.

Animal Rearing (Livestock)

Livestock is a major part of Shimshal’s economy.
Animals: Yak, sheep, goats, cows.

How they are raised:

  • In summer, animals graze in Shimshal Pamir, high-altitude pastures
  • Women often stay in Pamir to look after the herds
  • Dairy products such as yogurt, cheese, butter, and dried cheese blocks are made
  • Yaks help in transport and farming
This traditional grazing lifestyle is centuries old.
