Fairy Meadows – Base of Nanga Parbat
Fairy Meadows is located in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, in the Diamer District. It lies at an elevation of 3,300 meters (10,826 feet) above sea level, near Nanga Parbat, the world’s ninth-highest peak, also known as the “Killer Mountain.” The area is locally called “Joot,” and German mountaineers refer to it as Märchenwiese (“Fairy Tale Meadows”). The name “Fairy Meadows” was given in 1953 by Austrian climber Hermann Buhl, the first person to summit Nanga Parbat.
Fairy Meadows can be reached via a 15-kilometer jeep track from Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway to Tatu village. This road, considered highly dangerous by the World Health Organization, is only open to locals who provide transport. From Tatu, visitors hike 3–4 hours along a 5-kilometer trail to reach the meadows. The area is located in the Rakhiot Valley at the end of the Rakhiot Glacier, which originates from Nanga Parbat and flows into the Indus River.
Accommodation
Visitors can stay in small cabins or designated campsites, as Fairy Meadows is part of a National Park. The site serves as a base for climbers attempting Nanga Parbat’s northern face. Local-operated campsites and wooden cottages provide accommodation, with equipment, food, and guides available for trekking or climbing activities.
Activities
Fairy Meadows offers hiking to Bayal Camp and Nanga Parbat Base Camp, with experienced guides assisting in route planning. The area also supports supervised rock climbing and wildlife observation. Forests around the meadow are home to diverse bird and animal species, and the meadows overlook the Raikot Glacier and Nanga Parbat’s North Face.
