Broghil Valley – A Remote High-Altitude Wonderland in Chitral

Broghil Valley, located about 250 km north of Chitral, is one of Pakistan’s most remote and untouched mountain regions. Known for its wild beauty and high-altitude landscapes, the valley is home to Karambar Lake, the second-highest lake in Pakistan at 14,121 ft (4,304 m). Broghil also features nearly 30 freshwater lakes, each adding to its peaceful and natural charm.

The valley’s top attractions include Broghil Pass, a historic high mountain pass at 12,460 ft (3,798 m) that connects Pakistan with Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor. On the route, travelers also encounter Darkot Pass, linking Broghil with the Rawat Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan. With glaciers, grasslands, and rugged peaks, the entire region is rich in biodiversity.

Broghil National Park
To protect its wildlife and natural landscape, the area was declared Broghil National Park in 2010. The park is home to rare native and migratory species, especially Pamirian and Siberian birds. The valley mainly features alpine tundra, with low shrubs, grassy fields, moss, and lichen.

Culture & Broghil Festival

Broghil is well known for the Broghil Festival, held every year from 15–17 July. Visitors can enjoy unique local sports like Yak Polo, Yak Racing, Buzkashi, freestyle polo, horse and donkey races, tug-of-war, and traditional Wakhani music. These activities reflect the valley’s rich culture and centuries-old traditions.

How to Reach & Best Time to Visit
Reaching Broghil Valley requires a long 14-hour drive, followed by a trek through winding mountain terrain. Mastuj is the main town from where jeeps can be hired, and the track now extends up to Shakarwar. The valley remains snow-covered in winter, so the best time to visit is June to August, when the weather is pleasant, the landscape is lush, and the festival brings the area to life.
